When punishment doesn't fit the crime

In this country, how does a man get life in prison for spitting on a cop? Anybody with an ounce of common sense would not spit on a cop, but to give a guy life in prison??? The prosecution asked for 25 years, the defense 4 years. The judge apparently thought he deserved the maximum sentence. The funny thing:

In addition to the life term, Marquez received one year in jail and a $3,000 fine for his conviction for domestic assault and a $500 fine for resisting a peace officer.

He got one year for beating up a woman (and breaking her arm), and a small fine for resisting arrest. Doesn't this seem a bit backwards? This is going to be thrown out. It has to be.
