Israel Marks Birthday Amid More Violence

Fireworks lit the Jerusalem sky and revelers defiantly rededicated a Tel Aviv bar blown up days before in a suicide bombing as Israelis marked their country's 55th birthday, then headed to the countryside for family outings.

In Tel Aviv, a crowd of partygoers gathered outside Mike's Place, a bar wrecked by a suicide bombing just a week ago, killing a waitress and two musicians. Owners of the bar, which caters to foreigners and immigrants from Western countries and is just a few yards from the heavily guarded U.S. Embassy, carried out their pledge to reopen the watering hole by Independence Day.
